Twitter OAuth the easy way – simple post to twitter script

After Twitter introduced mandatory authentication with OAuth, many of the current scripts for posting content to Twitter don’t work anymore. OAuth can be great for more advanced authentication, but for a simple post to twitter script, it seems like a little overkill. In this post you’ll learn how to create a simple script that uses a quick and dirty version of OAuth for posting new tweets to Twitter. How to create a simple script Simplified, Twitter OAuth involves sending both ap...

Microsoft Edge extension manifest v2 migration to v3

In June 2023, Microsoft Edge would not allow Edge extensions with manifest version before v3 to be listed on Microsoft web stores as v3 extensions add more security privacy related restrictions on some of the functions. Hence all extensions with manifest v2 must migrate to v3. In this post, we would show how we did the migration for one of our extensions and the changes made. There is a checklist provided by Microsoft Edge team on what needs to be updated so that the extension can stil...

4 Reasons Why We are NOT in a Post-PC Age

Sales of desktop PCs and laptops are falling. It’s impossible to read any technical media without hearing about the “death of the PC.” And both Apple and Microsoft are soon to release operating systems that seek to merge the features of the computer operating system with those available on tablet devices. All this evidence mounts up to suggest that the Steve Jobs-coined “post PC era” is upon us. Well, I’m going to stick my neck out on this: I donâ€...

Chrome extension manifest v2 migration to v3

In 2023, Google would not allow Chrome extensions with manifest version before v3 to be listed on Chrome web stores as v3 extensions add more security privacy related restrictions on some of the functions. Hence all extensions with manifest v2 must migrate to v3. In this post, we would show how we did the migration for one of our extensions and the changes made. There is a checklist provided by Chrome team on what needs to be updated so that the extension can still work in v3. It can be checked ...

It takes hard work. Do the hard work.

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently is the idea of simply trying harder with everything I choose to spend my time on. It seems like an elusive thing, the idea of optimal focus and maximum effort. However, I think there is something to be gained from stopping for a moment and considering how focused we are when we do our daily activities. I think two things apply here: single-mindedness and massive effort. To truly excel at something, we need to be very focused. We can...

A strange behavior of printing struct with nested struct in GoLang

Normally when trying to print a struct , we would use %v to show all data of the struct. It will print the default format for each field in the struct. %v the value in a default format when printing structs, the plus flag (%+v) adds field names But recently we observed a strange behavior when printing a struct with nested struct which has a String() string implemented, the %v format prints an 'unexpected' output per our understanding.   Let's see the example snippet first. pa...

How to monitor user behavior in webpage

Sometimes there is a need for website owners to monitor user behavior on the site so that they can know what pages are mostly visited and which parts are more popular so that they can provide better service to their users. These behavior usually contain user clicks, user mouse over events etc. These data can be sent back to server when triggered with some meta data. In this post, we will cover a few ways to monitor user behavior on a web portal and send data back to backend sever. 1. Synchronous...

Using C for a specialized data store

Pixenomics stores and transports 1.2 million pixels from the server to the client. During development we played with various methods to store and process this. Our ultimate goal was to send the entire board in under 1 second. During the stages of prototyping we used a MySQL database without thinking too much about performance. With a mere 2,000 pixels we quickly realised this wasn’t even usable as a demo. Changing the storage engine to memory was much better but still obviously unu...

No support of $.browser in jQuery 1.9

Starting from jQuery 1.9, $.browser is no longer supported to detect the nrpwser type and version. The substitute is $.support. In the newer jQuery 2.x versions, IE 6/7/8 are also not supported. If users want to support IE 6/7/8, they must use jQuery 1.9. If you want to fully support IE and want to use jQuery 1.9 and jQuery 2.0, the official solution is: <!--[if lt IE 9]> <script src='jquery-1.9.0.js'></script> <![endif]--> <!--[if gte IE 9]> <script src=...

  Testing is not a Feature

I pointed out to someone at work today that PyDev 2.5.0 now offers really cool TDD support. I’m not a huge TDD proponent or anything, but this stirred up a discussion. This guy, let’s call him John, said that â€œTDD may shorten the time it takes to develop a feature, but sometimes a feature is so urgent we may want to deliver it as quickly as possible and test it later”.Sentences like that make me weep. I tried to explain that without testing, the...
