Language Complexity?
Some languages are complex, others are simple … right? C++ versus just about anything else is a good example here. But, it begs the question: what makes a language complex? So, I’ve just been reading Bruce Eckel’s Artima article on Scala. It’s actually a nice article, and I enjoyed it. But, one thing bugged me — and, it’s nicely summarised in this quote: But you can see from the code above that learning Scala should be a lot eas...

Microsoft Interview Riddle Questions
Every year, many people will send their resume to Microsoft and Google. So how do these IT companies hire people? What kind of interview questions will they ask. Let's see what Microsoft asked before in this article. These questions are more focusing on how you are reasoning, not necessary your technical skills. 1. You’ve got someone working for you for seven days and a gold bar to pay them. The gold bar is segmented into seven connected pieces. You must give them a piece of gold at...

Paint messages will come in as fast as you let them
There is a class of messages which are generated on demand rather than explicitly posted into a message queue. If you call GetÂMessage or PeekÂMessage and the queue is empty, then the window manager will look to see if one of these generated-on-demand messages is due, messages like WM_TIMER, WM_MOUSEÂMOVE, and WM_PAINT. Neil wonders, "In that program that called InvalidateÂRect 100,000 times, how many paint messages were generated?" The Zen answer to this question is "Yes." A ...

Tom Uglow from Google : 5 steps to innovation
Google has been known for its innovation In Google there is a "welfare": each employee can spare 20% of his/her time to do what he/she likes to do so that any idea has a chance to be turned into reality. Perhaps this freedom makes Google capable of introducing new products and new ideas continuously. Google China held a small discussion session in its office in Tsinghua Science Park recently, Google Creative Director Tom Uglow shared some experience and cases of Google in production and innovat...

Jack Ma : Where are you going during the weekends?
Jack Ma, the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba founder and executive chairman, was reported to show up in a night club named Dragon-i in Hong Kong on 17th August night (Beijing Time). It became the headline in China soon after this news was reported as many people thought it was quite unusual that a successful and super rich business man like him would show up in night clubs. Jack Ma explained on his Weibo(China's Twitter) on this and he posted a question to people as well which ...

Is coding going to die?
There is always a voice recent years saying that coding will gradually die, software development is more like an assembly job. i.e, programmer will be more and more like IT engineers. They seldom build something from scratch, instead they achieve the goal by assemble different components. There are people who have similar views around me. From the book "Clean code" written by Robert C Martin-- "One might argue that a book about code is somehow behind the times—that code is no longer...

Why cannot compare double values directly for equality?
A question in PHP: Get some value from the database and use floatval() to convert it to floatint point value, then compare it with another value which is also converted to floating point value with floatval(). These two values are the same when using var_dump() to output, the two outputs are float(8.87), they are the same. But when comparing them for equality, the result is weird., they are not equal. Why?To analyze this question, we need to start with PHP data types. PHP uses weak types. In PHP...

Do You Morph Into A Different Programmer?
Every experience you have as a software developer should change you in some way. And I don’t just mean growing older by virtue of time passing. Everything you do should evolve your understanding of your craft (and/or related skills) or your understanding of yourself – which ultimately achieves the same goal. I am not just talking about major milestones in your software development career like switching jobs, becoming a leader/manager or starting you own company. Every job, ev...

A Python assignment trap
Python has no assignment, it only has reference. Assume, we have following code snippet: >>> values = [0, 1, 2] >>> values[1] = values >>> values [0, [...], 2] Why the result is not [0, [0, 1, 2], 2], instead it goes into an infinite loop? To understand this, we need to understand some basics about Python. Python has no variables, it only has labels. When we run: values = [0, 1, 2] Python will first create a list object [0,1,2], then it labels it as values. If we later...

The Programmer Salary Taboo
Salary is an interesting topic. It's certainly one everyone has an opinion on. It's also a uniquely taboo subject among members of the working public. Since I'm about a month away from being done with University and entering the programmer workforce, I've taken to asking my classmates what type of starting salaries they're getting at their first jobs. The first thing I discovered is that not everybody is very comfortable with this question, and many companies are even less so. Microsoft requests...
