Will camera be Android's next target after smartphone and tablet?

Summary

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Camera, an Android-powered device integrating 3G/4G connectivity, advanced optical features, and full Android app support for editing and sharing photos. This move intensifies competition in the emerging smart camera market, where Samsung aims to leverage its Android optimization expertise against traditional camera manufacturers like Polaroid and Nikon. The smart camera concept is presented as a hybrid, akin to how ILDCs bridged the gap between digital cameras and DSLRs. By offering traditional camera image quality alongside smartphone convenience and network capabilities, these devices represent a potentially significant new category if cost barriers are overcome.

In Samsung's Mobile Unpack conference, Samsung announced one Android smart camera which supports 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi. This smart camera called Galxy Camera is equipped with the latest Android 4.1 system, 21 times zoom, 23mm ultra-wide-angle lens and 16 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, along with the OIS image stabilization technology. You can install various Android applications on this smart camera and edit photos and then share, it also comes with voice control function and cloud storage technology.

Polaroid and Nikon have launched Android-equipped smart camera prior to Samsung. Now Samsung also joined this market, this will bring more competition. After all, Polaroid and Nikon belong to the traditional camera manufacturers, although they are strong in optical technology, they are not better than Samsung on Android configuration and optimization. This Galaxy Camera's support to 3G, 4G and voice control is a proof.

Do we really need such smart camera?

In my opinion, the smart camera to the smartphone and traditional cameras is like Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera(ILDC) to the digital camera and SLR. Before the advent of the ILDC, users basically have only two options, the digital camera or SLR. One is portabable and the other is professional, they have distinct characteristics. The emergence of ILDC allows users to have a compromise choice, it retains the advantages of SLR interchangeable lenses with entry-level SLR performance, it also maintains the body's miniaturization and portability which is similar to digital camera.

Smart camera is the same, by the compromise between the camera photo quality and smartphone's convenience, users can experience the traditional camera's photo quality, and they can also take advantage of the rich variety of applications in the Android system and network support. If they can control costs, I think smart camera will rise silently like ILDC.
