It's only a few hours left that Google Reader will be shut down Since Google decides to decommission such a good product, many people are disappointed about Google. The gene of Google is completely different from Facebook, The strategy of promoting Google+ everywhere is becoming a bit offensive.

As a heavy user of Google Reader, people have to start looking for an alternative, Below we give a comparison of different Google Reader substitutes. And we compare them with following parameters:

  • Lload speed: The network we used as the testing is Shanghai Telecom
  • Retrieve speed: The speed of retrieving hot RSS topics
  • Reading experience: How much it is different from Google Reader
  • Import process: The process of migrating from Google Reader
  • Search capabilities, The ability to specify the search fields and the accuracy of the results
  • Service guarantee and the company behind it
  • Other features in particular, to consider whether to support data export function

And we have nearly 300 subscriptions, covering both popular RSS and those updated once a few months.

Statistics for the last 30 days

  • All subscriptions: 280
  • Read entries: 12,419
  • Clicked entries: 26
  • Starred entries: 0
  • Sent email entries: 0

Since November 27, 2011 since you read a total of 300,000 + entries.

Some labeled N/A needs further observation

Feedly

  • Load speed ★ ★ ★
  • Retrieve speed ★ ★ ★
  • Crawl coverage ★
  • Reading experience ★ ★
  • Import process ★ ★ ★ ★
  • Search capability ★
  • Service guarantee ★ ★ ★ ★
  • Other features ★ ★

It's said the best Google Reader substitute, but we had not experienced its excellence. Here are what we  are not happy with:

  1. Slow. The load speed was unbearable, it has a bit speed improvement after migrating to cloud though
  2. Crawling is not comprehensive. Google Reader would crawl several times a day for some unpopular feeds, while Feedly crawls once a few days or even never crawls.
  3. Reading experience. Feedly provides a magazine-style layout, but it may be not suitable for products like Reader because the contents in Reader are chosen by user themselves, they will read them with a strong purpose, magazine layout is more focused on contents that are pushed to users. Shortcut keys are also changed to kj rather than the usual np.
  4. Do not support search
  5. Feedly currently has no export function

Digg Reader

  • Load speed ★
  • Retrieve speed N/A
  • Crawl coverage N/A
  • Reading experience ★ ★ ★ ★
  • Import process ★ ★ ★
  • Search capability ★
  • Service guarantee ★ ★ ★
  • Other features ★

Forgetting about its functions first, Digg Reader's marketing is indeed very successful, it attracts the public's attention even with an incomplete product.

The interface of Digg Reader is very close to Google Reader, it's simple and it also retains shortcut keys of Google Reader. But now it seems only complete the core functionality, and sometimes the page is loaded slowly, the weird part is that users also cannot see the number of unread entries.

The Old Reader

  • Load speed ★ ★ ★ ★
  • Retrieve speed ★ ★ ★
  • Crawl coverage ★ ★
  • Reading experience ★ ★ ★ ★
  • Import process ★ ★ ★
  • Search capability ★ ★ ★
  • Service guarantee ★ ★ ★
  • Other features ★ ★ ★ ★

The Old Reader is very pragmatic, although the interface is designed with Twitter Bootstrap, there are s complete set of features, and it provides data export and account deletion function. Its API is still being tested, The biggest drawback now is its crawl coverage is still not so satisfying.

InoReader

  • Load speed ★ ★ ★
  • Crawl speed ★ ★ ★
  • Crawl coverage ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
  • Reading experience ★ ★ ★ ★
  • Import process ★ ★ ★
  • Search capability ★ ★
  • Service guarantee ★ ★ ★
  • Other features ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

InoReader is very similar to The Old Reader, The crawling of unpopular RSS is the best, but the load speed is slightly slower than The Old Reader. It also provides data export function.

So make your decision on which RSS reader to use. Google Reader is saying good bye to us.
